Josephine Mary Lowrey, 87, died on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Catholic Elder Care in Minneapolis, succumbing to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease after more than 13 years.
Though her memories were lost to Josie, her family will treasure their memories of a charming English war bride whose cheerful and inexhaustible supply of British quips were a constant source of amusement (and awe) to family and friends. Along with her husband, Jim, “Jo” created a snug home for a large family. It was a hospitable place, steeped in love, laughter, and endless, welcoming tea parties. In addition to being a supportive mother and grandmother, she was a master baker and world-class knitter who combined high energy and hard work with a deep and quiet faith.
Born in Aldershot, England, Josie was the third daughter of Donald and Maud Sutherland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; daughter, Cathy; son, Steven; and sisters, Jean and Margaret.
She is survived by daughters, Gillian Kunze, of Grand Marais, Barbara Jaworski of Plymouth and Sherri (Brian) Lowrey-Schrandt of Rochester; sons, Keith Lowrey of Bagley and Scott Lowrey of North Potomac, Md.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews on both sides of the Atlantic.
A private internment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Memorials may be sent to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Center or Catholic ElderCare in Minneapolis.
