The Mower County Sheriff’s office has identified recent phone calls around the area as a scam with a twist.
Sheriff Terese Amazi said she received at least two reports of area residents getting calls from someone claiming to be a federal agency. The caller has reportedly been telling people they are victims of a scam and need to provide their Social Security numbers and banking information for verification.
However, the call itself is a scam, Amazi said.
“There are no federal officers contacting these people,” she said.
If anyone receives such a call, they should not provide any personal information, and they should contact the Mower County Sheriff’s office at 437-9400.
