Sluggish second half dooms Riverland men

The Riverland men’s basketball team had a rough second half as it fell to Northern Iowa Area Community College (6-7 overall) 84-60 in Mason City, Iowa Wednesday.

The Blue Devils (7-5 overall) trailed 37-32 at the break, but they shot just 28 percent in the second half, while NIACC shot 50 percent and ran away with it.

“We were in the game at halftime and we knew what we had to do,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We didn’t do a good job of putting bodies on people and they’re big guys got to us.”

Zach Bunch had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, but NIACC wasn’t about to let him score 40 like he did in an 87-85 loss to NIACC earlier this season.

“They put the clamps on Zach. They were putting two guys on him the whole game,” Koenigs said.

RCC now heads into its break and it will return to action Jan. 3. Koenigs expects Denzel Smith to be back in the lineup for that game and he’s hoping to get Jordan Osberg back as well.

“If we get those two back and don’t have anyone else ineligible, we should be pretty good,” Koenigs said.
