A 30-year-old Austin man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly attacked his father-in-law and threatened him with a knife.
According to police Capt. Dave McKichan, the father-in-law, 51, called police from Kwik Trip on West Oakland Avenue around 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
The man told police he was sitting at a table when his son-in-law, who was allegedly intoxicated, threatened to punch him. The son-in-law reportedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and held it to the man’s throat, according to McKichan. The man’s daughter was able to get the knife away from her husband, according to police reports, and then she fled the house with a 6-year-old child.
The victim reported that he tried to leave to call 9-1-1, but his son-in-law allegedly pushed him down and choked him before he could escape. Police arrested the son-in-law at Kwik Trip, where he followed the victim and asked the man to buy him food, according to McKichan.
The woman told officers her husband attacked her father because the two were arguing about money. She said her husband had gotten drunk very late at night and was still intoxicated, according to McKichan.
The man will likely be charged this week in Mower County District Court. He could face charges of second-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation.
