A Dexter man is in jail awaiting formal charges after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulted her new boyfriend with a flashlight Friday morning.

Jesse Helgeson, 26, was arrested on assault and burglary charges after breaking into a home at the 800 block of Ninth Avenue NW, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.

Krueger said police took a call from a woman at the residence around 12:16 a.m. Friday. The woman told police she and her boyfriend were asleep when they heard a noise coming from downstairs.

Helgeson allegedly came into the bedroom several minutes later brandishing a flashlight.

Helgeson reportedly jumped on top of the boyfriend and hit him over the head several times with the flashlight. The boyfriend managed to get away from Helgeson, after which Helgeson ran downstairs and fled the house.

Mower County Sheriff’s deputies later found Helgeson’s pickup-truck in Dexter, and arrested him. Helgeson was taken to the Mower County Jail pending formal charges.
