A Kenyon man was charged this week with five felonies after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend with a flashlight.
Jesse Allen Helgeson, 26, was charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault. He was released from jail Tuesday on bail.
According to Police Chief Brian Krueger, police were called to the 800 block of Ninth Avenue NW just after midnight on Jan. 6. Helgeson’s ex-girlfriend told police she and her boyfriend were asleep when they awoke to noises coming from the lower level of their home.
Helgeson allegedly came into the bedroom several minutes later brandishing a flashlight as a weapon. According to police reports, Helgeson allegedly jumped on top of the boyfriend and hit him over the head several times with the flashlight. The man got away from Helgeson, he told police, but Helgeson allegedly fled the house.
Mower County Sheriff’s deputies later found Helgeson’s pickup-truck in Dexter and arrested him.
Helgeson is expected to enter a plea in Mower County District Court on Jan. 19.
