Probation in store for assault convict

An Albert Lea woman accused of breaking another woman’s wrist during an assault in 2011 was sentenced Thursday to stayed jail time.

Instead of spending one year in jail, 26-year-old Jessica Maria Ortiz will serve two years probation. She was convicted of fifth-degree assault within three years of a previous conviction. One charge of third-degree assault was dismissed when she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

According to court documents, the alleged assault took place at Kwik Trip on Fourth Street Northwest in Austin around 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 24.

Police arrived to find a woman with dried blood on her shirt, pants, face and neck. Her lip, nose, face and wrist were also swollen, according to a court complaint.

The woman told police Ortiz punched her in the head and continued to beat her as a man held her down.

The fight reportedly stemmed from an argument over a man at a dance earlier in the night, according to the court complaint.

Ortiz suffered a severe wrist fracture in the fight, according to court documents. Kwik Trip surveillance caught the assault on tape.
