From dragon hatchers to space brats, Austin is getting a visit from an out-of-this-world author next week.
Bruce Coville, acclaimed young adult author of such classics like “My Teacher is an Alien” and “Bruce Coville’s Book of Monsters,” will visit Austin students next Tuesday and speak to the community Tuesday night at the Austin Public Library.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Ann Hokanson, Austin Public Library executive director.
Coville will stop in Austin as part of a five-city tour, which Austin was able to participate in through Southeastern Libraries Cooperating system and through matching Legacy amendment grants.
In anticipation of Coville’s visit, the Friends of the Austin Public Library bought about 700 copies of Coville’s books “My Teacher is an Alien,” “Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher,” and “The Monster’s Ring” to give to students at Neveln and Pacelli Elementary Schools, as well as to donate through the library.
“We are super excited,” Pacelli Elementary Principal Mary Holtorf said. “He’s an A-list children’s author.”
Each second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-grader at Pacelli received a copy of all three books, which teachers have used as part of class. That engagement makes Coville’s visit all the more special, according to Holtorf.
“It makes it come to life more for the students,” she said.
Deb Swanson agrees. The Media Assistant at Neveln said teachers and students alike are excited over Coville’s visit, as each Neveln third-, fourth- and fifth-grader received a copy of all three books.
“It’s very exciting,” Swanson said. “Each of the classrooms are doing a thank you for the library. We wouldn’t have him if it wasn’t for the library.”
Coville will visit Pacelli students starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by Neveln students at 12:30 p.m. He will speak to community members at the library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with seating starting at 5:30 p.m.
Coville is famous for his myriad young adult books, many of which were published in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
