A winter storm system, which should reach the Austin area by tomorrow morning, is proving that spring is not yet here.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis., issued a winter storm watch to begin Tuesday afternoon and continue through Wednesday afternoon. The storm could bring one to four inches of snow to the Austin area, according to NWS officials.

A low-pressure system over the west coast should reach the Rockies by Monday night and possibly bring some snowfall to the Midwest after midnight, which may increase into Tuesday. However, snow will likely turn into sleet and freezing rain later on Tuesday mostly along the Interstate 90 corridor. Areas north of I-90 could receive as much as six to 12 inches of snow, according to the NWS.

“This is one of the strongest systems we’ve seen this winter, and this may indeed bring our first significant snowfall for the region,” said John Wetenkamp, NWS meteorologist.

Wetenkamp urges travelers to stay up to date on the latest forecast, as road conditions could become bad.

Wetenkamp expects precipitation to switch back to all snow by Wednesday morning. Though temperatures may stay in the mid- to low-30s, more snow may also be on the way for Friday, according to the NWS.
