An Austin man is at large after allegedly pushing a Department of Corrections official Thursday morning.

Jamie Lee Schammel, 31, could face a fifth-degree assault charge over shoving a corrections employee over his latest urine analysis, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.

The employee and an intern filed a report at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday after Schammel arrived at the corrections office for a urine analysis. The employee noticed something was off about Schammel’s sample and asked him about it. Schammel allegedly became argumentative and swore at the employee, according to Krueger. Krueger said Schammel pushed the employee into a wall and left the office. The intern witnessed the altercation and corroborated the employee’s report.

Krueger said police have not found Schammel yet, but the case has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s office.

Schammel pleaded guilty to fifth-degree felony drug possession in 2009 and was convicted on a murder charge in 2003 for his part in a deadly methamphetamine flash fire.
