Hazel Edna (Bates) Chase, 91, of Austin, Minn., died Monday, March 12, 2012, at the Stewartville Care Center.

Hazel was born Feb. 11, 1921 in Stacy, Minn to William and Harriet (Simmons) Bates. On July 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to Paul P. Chase. He preceded her in death on March 19, 1994. Hazel was a homemaker. She was a member of the Austin Art Association, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles Club. Her interests and talents included being a local artist, poet, quilter, and making artificial flowers for weddings. Hazel played the violin, piano, organ, and she was a CCD teacher.

Survivors include five children, Julia Everson, Austin, Paul (Judith) Chase, Aurora, Ohio, Mary Jo Heimermann, Davenport, Fla., John “Jack” Chase, Wausau, Wis., Jane (Mike) Hedin, Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ella May Briggs, Austin; brother, Wayne (Lois) Bates, Austin; sister-in-law, Joyce Bates, Austin; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Haskin; son, Daniel Wayne Chase; sons-in-law, Wayne Heimermann and Ron Everson; granddaughters, Holly Jo Heimermann and Lynne Deneen Berg; three brothers and two sisters.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The honorary casket bearers will be Paul S. Chase, Jeff Heimermann, Jason Heimermann, Josh Hofseth and Dean Haskin. The casket bearers will be Jodi Bates, Glenn Wiesjham, Kenny Everson, Leon Everson, Randy Bates and Buford Chase.
