Artyce Joy Palmer, 87, Albert Lea

Artyce Joy Palmer, 87, of Albert Lea, formerly of Black River Falls, Wis., passed away Friday, April 20, 2012, at her home in Albert Lea. She was born June 7, 1924, in Shake Hollow, rural Melrose, Jackson County, Wis., to Etta O. Nelson-Gilbertson.

Artyce grew up in the Black River Falls, Wis., area and was a graduate of Black River Falls High School. After high school, she went on to the Teachers College, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, for her teaching degree. Artyce taught at several rural schools in the Black River Falls area.

She was united in marriage to Ernest Shankey, and he preceded her in death in 1952. Artyce then married, Charles Palmer on June 20, 1953, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Black River Falls. Together the couple moved to Edgerton, Wis., from 1953 to 1985, where she taught in the Milton School District, Milton, Wis. In 1985, they moved to Black River Falls before moving to Albert Lea in 1995.

Artyce enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, needle work, traveling, playing cards, entertaining, and most of all she loved to spend time with her family, that was very important to her.

She was a past member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Black River Falls and also a past member and president of Squaw Creek Lutheran Church also of Black River Falls.

Artyce is survived by her husband, Charles of Albert Lea; daughter, Marietta (Fred) Stein of Albert Lea; two grandchildren: Andrew (Erin) Stein of Grand Forks, N.D., great-grandson, Connor and Kristoffer (Kaitlin) of Austin; other nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Etta; and sister, Donna Peterson.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Torgerson Funeral Home, Black River Falls. The Rev. Richard Spande will be officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls. Family and friends are invited for visitation Saturday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
