Lyle board reinstates old comment policy

The Lyle Public School board made its original public comment policy official Monday.

The board approved going back to its original policy, enacted in 1998, on Monday night during its monthly public meeting. The policy allows people to sign up to speak to the board during meetings, though district officials prefer people sign up five days before the meeting if they plan on sharing documents and other information with board members.

“We pretty much opened it up like it should be,” said Board Chairman Jerry Sampson.

In addition, the board approved refinancing its 2006 capital bond project, which is projected to save the district about $350,000 in total, or about $25,000 a year. The refinance won’t happen right away, but district officials will work with the state to find the lowest possible interest before refinancing, according to Sampson.

The board also formed a committee to examine the district’s administration needs going forward. Interim superintendent/principal Joe Guanella’s contract is set to expire on June 30 and the board is weighing its options on how to proceed. Though board members have publicly stated before that they don’t want an administrator doing both superintendent and principal duties, Sampson said all options will be considered.

Sharing a superintendent with another district would be “the ideal situation,” Sampson said. Lyle previously shared superintendent Jerry Reshetar with Glenville/Emmons and Grand Meadow Public Schools as part of a consortium between the three, before Reshetar resigned from Lyle in April 2011.
