A LeRoy woman who was charged for shooting at a building she allegedly thought her daughter was in pleaded not guilty Thursday in Mower County Court.

Marina Cathlina Young, 35, pleaded not guilty to two felony charges: drive-by shooting with a dangerous weapon and discharge of dangerous weapons within a municipality.

According to the court complaint, police dispatched to LeRoy for a report of a runaway child at about 9 a.m. March 16. Young told officers she had not seen her daughter since 4 p.m. the previous day and that she could be hiding in a vacant building.

Officers later spoke with a man who had been working on top of a grain bin who said he saw a woman fire three to four shots at a nearby building at about 7:15 a.m., according to the court complaint. The man then allegedly saw the woman, later identified as Young, walk closer and shoot the lock on the building door.

According to the witness, Young said, “If you’re in there, you’re dead.”

The complaint also says the man watched Young return the gun to her car and then enter the building with two of her other children. The officer later spoke with Young at her home, which is near the building.

According to the complaint, Young told the officer she believed her daughter was “dead or frozen” inside the building, so she fired shots at the door using a .22 caliber rifle and used a sledgehammer to break inside.

The child was later found unharmed and returned to school that day.

Young was also arrested two weeks ago when she allegedly fled officers who were serving a Steele County warrant for her probation violation in that county.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 19.
