The Sprouts “Get Out and Grow” program will launch its second season with a Sprouts Planting Party inviting families with children of all ages to learn and grow in the garden at the Austin Hy-Vee, home of the first-of-its-kind kids garden and cooking program at a supermarket, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Families with children may stop in anytime for this free event which will involve learning about cancer-fighting vegetables, planting parts of the garden, making a healthy breakfast, taking a
photo in a milk moustache, and much more.
The goal is to educate and inspire families and children to eat healthier through hands-on learning. Parents also will learn how to register their children for garden classes.
The Hormel Institute will announce a new educational partner for the Sprouts Get Out and Grow program.
With this new partnership, representatives from The Hormel Institute will educate young children throughout the summer on the benefits of eating cancer-fighting vegetables through innovative and inspiring ways.
In addition, Burpee Home Gardens will also partner with the event, showing its line of high nutrition vegetable plants that provide up to 500 percent more nutrients.
“We are excited to expand our educational offerings to provide a valuable and memorable experience to enhance healthy lifestyles for children and families in our area,” said Jen Haugen, RD, LD, initial creator of the Sprouts Get Out and Grow program at the Austin Hy-Vee.
The first season was launched in spring 2011 with the goal of teaching the connection of fresh food to good health in children ages 3- to 9-years-old. Because of its success, Hy-Vee will launch the program to other stores within the Hy-Vee chain.
