Martha Elaine (Vollum) Reed, 87, died Tuesday May 14, 2012, in Annapolis, Md.

Elaine was born to Laura (Johnsrud) and Martin T. at the home of her maternal grandmother, Helene Johnsrud in Albert Lea. The attending physician was her uncle. Dr. Edward Vollum.

She was raised on the family farm in Lerdal. She was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Finn Magelssen at East Freeborn Lutheran Church. She attended rural grade school, No. 88, first through eighth grade and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1942. She was honored to have been chosen for their homecoming queen.

Following high school, Elaine attended the University of Minnesota and air traffic school in Kansas City, Mo. Her job placement was El Paso, Texas. Her next employment was in Yokahoma, Japan, during the Korean War and it was where she met her future husband, George Reed, a member of the Army. Following marriage, his career took them to Germany, France, Turkey and back to the United States where they resided in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Md. While residing in Washington, she studied interior design which became her career in Annapolis. Throughout her residence there she also volunteered at various community organizations, including Historic Annapolis aad Paca Gardens,

She moved to a retirement community, and eventually into its care unit where she died from age complications. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Elaise is survived by sisters: Jeanette Mosrtenson of Albert Lea and Muriel Vollum of Charlotte, N.C., sisters-in-law: Mary Davis of Annapolis, and Bernadine Reed of California and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Col. George Reed; brother Orville Vollum (Evelyn); sister Margaret Anderson (Lester); and brother-in-laws: Robert Mortenson and Jay Myers.
