BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The subsection track and field meet in Blooming Prairie Thursday wasn’t that much different than any other meet for Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland junior Elizabeth May.
She just did what she’s done quite a few times this year as she took first place in all four events she competed in — two relays, the triple jump and the 400-meter dash.
“It’s great (to do well here), there’s some better competition and I’m trying to get better times for sections. I hope it all goes well,” she said.
May was on the 4 x 100-meter relay team with Sydney Bendtsen, Elizabeth May, Addison Tapp and Betsy Oswald that took first by about six seconds and she anchored the 4 x 400-meter relay team that includes Bendsten, Danielle Hanson and Betsy Oswald and took first by about 15 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, her time of 1:01.24 was 3.7 seconds faster than the second place finisher and her triple jump distance of 33 feet, 9.5 inches won by a foot.
May, who will compete in the Section 1A preliminaries in Winona next Tuesday, said her best chance of getting to the state meet is in the 400-meter dash.
“I’m really hoping for the 400,” she said. “I’m coming in seeded fourth and I’m coming in really close behind three other girls. Hopefully that will give me the extra motivation.”
May showed her stamina on Thursday as she closed out the 4 x 400-meter relay just minutes after finishing the triple jump finals.
“My legs are very tired, but you’ve got to do what you’ve go to do,” she said. “Our team did so good and we’re all out there cheering each other on.”
GMLOS won the meet as many of its athletes stepped up.
Bendtsen, an eighth grader, won the 100-meter dash and the long jump, Oswald, a senior, won the 200-meter dash, McKenzie Kirtz, a freshman won the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run, Hanson, a junior, took first in the 300-meter hurdles and sophomore Morgan Schmitz took first in the discus
