Best Bets: Nerf, music and horses

I can count plenty of activities in the Austin area this weekend, and none of them have to do with TVs, computers or video games. After work on Friday, take the kids down to the YMCA, where all the fun begins. It’s going to be awesome — guaranteed.
1. Nerf wars
There may be a few things cooler than playing with Nerf guns, but I haven’t found out what they are. Scratch that; Nerf guns are the coolest, and the YMCA is hosting an hour-and-a-half war with them from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. Registration per pair is $15 for members or $25 for nonmembers.
2. SEMSCA Horse Show
After all that horsing around, get ready for some horsing around — literally. The SEMSCA Horse Show will be held 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Mower County Fairgrounds. But it’s not just for show; it’s all ages, barrel racing, pole weaving, rescue races and western pleasure, as well.
3. Breakfast on the Farm
A chance for city folk to get out on the farm starts bright and early; at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The annual Breakfast on the Farm will be held at Gene Anderson’s Dairy Farm, 30111 620th Ave., near Waltham. Tickets are $3 per person or $12 per family. Ages 6 and younger get in free. Enjoy a petting zoo, a farm tour and good old-fashion pancakes and sausage breakfast with coffee and juice.
4. Downtown rummage sale
Behold: another rummage sale. Downtown Main Street in Austin is holding a rummage sale beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Who knew anything was left at this point?
5. Sound of Music
Hey, what’s that sound? It’s the “Sound of Music,” quickly approaching and opening 7 p.m. Sunday at Riverland’s Frank W. Bridges Theatre. Among Nerf guns, it may just be a few of someone’s favorite things. Tickets are $15, and $10 for students and youth 16 and younger. The show also plays at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
6. Zoomobile
And there is even more cool stuff: The Minnesota Zoomobile will make a stop at the Austin Public Library at 1:30 p.m. next Wednesday. That’s just one of the many features of the library’s summer reading program. Check out more of their events in the community calendar or on their website at austinpubliclibrary.org
Other events
Summer means vacation bible schools are kicking off in the area, Spamtown Belle rides are open on Fridays through Sundays, and a new exhibit at the Mower County Historical Society is set to open, as well.
Look to Reporter Matt Peterson’s column every Friday for more about upcoming events in Austin. For even more, check out the calendar on Page 4 every day in the print edition and the AustinDailyHerald.com homepage.
