Gertrude Irene Steinbrink, 103, of Austin, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Sacred Heart Care Center, where she was a resident.
Gert was born Jan. 18, 1909, in Wyoming, Minn. to Archie and Urma (Stevens) Grant. On March 16, 1927, she married Francis W. Steinbrink at Kendall, Wisconsin. Four children were born to this union. In 1937 the family moved to Minnesota.
Gertrude was employed by Hormel Foods from 1944 to 1965, when she retired. After retirement, they enjoyed their home on Ten Mile Lake in Hackensack, Minn. and winters in the South. In 1982 they moved to Spring Valley, Minn. In 1994 Gertrude moved back to Austin into an apartment at the Cedars. In 2004 she moved to Sacred Heart Assisted Living and lived there until April 2012 when she moved to the nursing home.
Gert loved traveling, crocheting, knitting and visiting with friends and family. While living at the Cedars, she helped start the Kitchen Band. She played the washboard. To play this she made gloves with washers on the end of the fingers to get more sound out of it. She loved music and was very proud of the band.
Survivors include two daughters, Urma (Roy) Norland, Austin and Patricia Flanders, Austin; a son, Robert (JoAnn) Steinbrink, Chatfield, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Betty Steinbrink, Austin; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel (Ken) LaVake, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis in 1992; son, Lloyd in 2009; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeff Forbes officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
