KFC has closed the Long John Silvers portion of its restaurant and brought back the KFC buffet.

The Long John Silver’s in Austin has closed to make way for a Kentucky Fried Chicken buffet.

KFC has closed the Long John Silvers recently and replaced it with the KFC buffet.

Austin KFC General Manager Mike Hill said the move came after they surveyed customers of the split KFC and Long John Silver’s store.

“We did a survey a while back and the buffet won. It’s what the people wanted,” he said. “They weren’t as interested in Long John Silver’s.”

While the combo of Long John Silvers and KFC has come to an end with the departure of Long John Silvers, KFC continues and has brought back its buffet.

Long John Silver’s closed Tuesday, June 19, and after working over night constructing the buffet, it opened the next day.

Hill said the buffet features fried, crispy and grilled chicken, along with a full salad bar, the normal sides and new ones like fried okra, and different desserts like cobblers and bread pudding. Hill said while some people have missed Long John Silver’s, the change has gone over extremely well.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “I’ve had a packed lobby every day.”

The buffet is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days per week. Hill said they may also add a children’s night, and new items like country fried steak and gravy.

Yum! Brands Inc. owned both Long John Silver’s and KFC until December 2011, when LJS Partners LLC purchased Long John Silver’s.
