Last-minute filers for city offices showed up to register as candidates Monday, the second-to-last day in the filing period. City Hall closes to filings for the 2012 election at 5 p.m. today.

Dick Lang, who spent eight years as a Mower County commissioner and has been on the City Council before, was the fifth candidate to file for mayor. He said one of his primary goals will be to curb tax increases.

“I’m going to make a pledge if I’m elected that we will not see a property tax raise next year,” Lang said. “It’s getting out of hand.”

Three new candidates filed for Austin City Council Monday. Riverland student Alex Mayfield is now the only challenger to incumbent Janet Anderson’s seat as council member at large. Mayfield said his focus was to improve the business environment in Austin.

“I want to see more business come into downtown, and I’d like to see the mall do better,” he said.

Current Council Member Brian McAlister said he chose not to run for re-election on his Ward 1 seat. Two candidates filed Monday for the seat: Aaron Jones, assistant Mower County attorney, and Malcolm W. McDonald.

Filings for school, county and state offices must also be turned in by 5 p.m. today.
