ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Officials at the Minnesota Zoo were considering an end to a popular dolphin exhibit several months before the Legislature approved $4 million that many state lawmakers thought would be used to fix up the dolphin tanks.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports Wednesday that documents show the zoo’s discussion was underway well before Gov. Mark Dayton and lawmakers signed off on $4 million in state bonds for the zoo.

Zoo director Lee Ehmke says some members of Dayton’s staff and a handful of lawmakers were notified of the possibility, but he admits failing to get the message to everyone.

Ehmke says the money will still be used to refurbish the tank which may be used to house stingrays or sea lions. But several lawmakers want a hearing on the matter.
