Track: Austin’s state qualifiers bow out in prelims

ST. PAUL — Austin’s Carolyn Hackel and Omot Okello saw their season’s come to an end at the Class ‘AA’ track and field preliminaries at Hamline University Friday.

Austin freshman Carolyn Hackel missed out on advancing to the finals by four-hundredths of a second in the 100-meter dash preliminaries as she matched her career best and school record time of 12.45 seconds. She couldn’t get into the top nine as she finished 10th.

Hackel also ran a career best time in the 200-meter dash at 25.77 seconds and she was one-tenth of a second from tying the school record, but she missed out on the finals by two -tenths of a second. Hackel finished 12th in the prelims.

Wensia Johnson, and eighth grader from Alexandria, broke the Minnesota Class ‘AA’ record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.74 seconds as she took first in the prelims.

Austin junior Omot Okello finished 20th in the 110-meter hurdles and will not run in Saturday’s finals.

Okello finished with a time of 15.29 seconds.
