Summerset ends season with British farce

Summerset Theatre will close out its 45th season with the comedy “Cash on Delivery!” by Michael Cooney, which opens Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre, Riverland Community College. Other performances are Aug. 1, 2, 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Called a hilarious and fast-paced British farce, the comedy features a con artist who decides to call it quits on his longtime welfare scam. Just when he resolves to kill off the imaginary recipients whose benefits he has been claiming, investigators show up. The result is a zany race to untangle a complex web of lies and deception.

“‘Cash on Delivery!’ is the perfect finale for our 45th season,” said Lindsey Williams, executive director of Summerset Theatre. “Playwright Michael Cooney is the son of Ray Cooney, whose plays have been very popular with Summerset audiences in the past.”

She recommended the play for those who liked “Funny Money,” “Run For Your Wife” or “Caught in the Net.”

“People have said that their sides have hurt from laughing so much,” Director David Dahlquist said. “The lines, the jokes, the characters, the situations are so funny. One lie turns into a bigger one and the lies grow and we watch the characters try to work through them. This one is no different. It builds to a riotous ending.”

“Cash on Delivery!” is suggested for ages 14 and older due to some mature subject matter. Some audience members may find some subjects, language or situations objectionable. Summerset Theater encourages audience members to become familiar with the material before attending the performance.
