County board to discuss cost of merger

The Mower County Board of Commissioners will know more about how much it will cost to remodel the Government Center Tuesday.
During its regular county board meeting, Mike Larson of Knutson Construction, the remodel’s construction management firm, will update the board on how much it’s going to cost to renovate the old jail and court rooms to move Health and Human Services downtown.
The remodel will also include renovations to the Law Enforcement Center jointly paid for by the county and city.
Previous estimates called for the project to cost about $6 million, but county officials have said they’d have a more precise number after project architect Paul R. Johnson Architects finished inspecting the building and forming a design plan.
The board will also discuss the once 12-county Southeastern Minnesota Redesign Project. After last Tuesday, six counties are in and six counties are out. Houston, the final county to vote, opted to move forward, joining Mower, Freeborn, Steele, Dodge and Waseca counties.
The project to merge the human services departments of 12 counties is tentatively moving forward, according to County Coordinator Craig Oscarson, even though six counties have opted out.
According to Oscarson, the six remaining counties will likely host a meeting in September with all county commissioners from the six counties still involved to decide whether to move ahead.
