HRA clock will stay out-of-sync

For those keeping time, the long-incorrect clocks mounted on the Austin Housing and Redevelopment Authority office aren’t about to start ticking again anytime soon.

“It stopped years ago, all three faces,” said Sherri Detloff, HRA accountant.

The burdensome price of getting that display up and working again doesn’t warrant fixing it, especially since the clocks have undergone multiple repairs and break again.

In 2009, when the HRA last considered an overhaul of the clocks, the estimate came to about $7,000 to fix all three faces. Detloff said that wasn’t money the HRA wanted to put forth, since the clock may just malfunction once more.

“I don’t want to spend taxpayers’ dollars to get it fixed,” she said.

Detloff couldn’t say what exactly was wrong with the clock, but she guessed the parts wore down over time. The clock has been there for about 13 years, she added.

Correction: This article incorrectly stated that the most recent repair cost $7,000 in 2009. In fact, the clock was fixed for a minimal cost before that date. $7000 was an estimate for an overhaul in 2009 that the HRA did not opt for because of the high cost. Further, the HRA is looking for ideas on a replacement display for the clock, and may be reached at (507) 433-1866.
