Local USDA, 4H helping feed the needy

The Mower County USDA Service Center announced it is partnering with Mower County 4H clubs to participate in the fourth annual Feds Feed Families Food Drive.

The fundraising event begins Aug. 6 at the Mower County fairgrounds in the 4H building. All proceeds from food sales, plus any cash donations will benefit rural food shelves in Lyle, Grand Meadow, LeRoy and Southland districts. There will also be a “Kiss an Animal” contest involving local celebrities.

The Feds Feed Families Food Drive is a national effort that started in 2009 to help food banks and pantries stay stocked during the summer months. During the summer, food banks and pantries usually experience lower levels of donations and a higher demand for assistance.

If anyone would like to join the effort but won’t be at the fair, there is also a donation drop box at the USDA Service Center in Austin. For more information, contact Michelle Janssen with the Mower County USDA Farm Service Agency at 507-433-2343, extension 114.
