Loren Herbert Damerow, 88

Loren Herbert Damerow, 88, of Columbia Heights, Minn., passed away on July 4, 2012, two years to the day since his beloved wife passed.

He served in the army in World War II and rose to be a technical sergeant while serving in the Philippines and Japan with the 35th Infantry Regiment. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he graduated from the University of Minnesota and Hamline and began an elementary teaching career. He earned an advanced degree in library science and spent the rest of his career with the Mounds View school system as a librarian. He retired in 1985.

He and Lois, his wife of 60 years, loved to play cards and were avid travelers. They were in Europe nine times and visited all 50 states. Loren loved to read and was a history buff. As a young child he learned to speak fluent German. He used that talent over the years to teach many youngsters German in summer school.

Loren is survived by his brother, Arno (Nancy); two sons, Wayne (Kathy) and Allen (Barb); five grandchildren, John, Sarah, Joel, Jacob and Leah; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 41st Avenue and Washington Street NE, Columbia Heights. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Calvary Cemetery, Deer Park, Wis.
