A potential plea deal is in the works for a St. Paul man charged with stabbing his wife and killing an Albert Lea man.
Pah Ber, 49, has a plea hearing on Friday, where he can accept a deal, said Dennis Gerhardstein, public information officer with the Ramsey County Attorney’s office. Gerhardstein didn’t confirmed whether Ber will accept the deal.
Ber appeared in court Monday for a pretrial hearing, where Ber was found competent to proceed to trial and he stated he did not suffer from any “mental defect” at the time he allegedly stabbed 40-year-old Po Lye to death Nov. 19.
Ber faces one charge of second-degree murder in the death of Lye and one charge of second-degree attempted murder for an alleged attack on his wife, Paw Pree, 40, of St. Paul. He pleaded not guilty to both counts during a hearing in December.
Court documents allege Ber stabbed Lye after accusing him of cheating with his wife. After stabbing Lye, Ber allegedly turned on his wife. Ber allegedly stabbed her numerous times, including several times in the eyes.
The alleged incident took place in an apartment in St. Paul’s North End neighborhood. Ber and Pree’s children reportedly witnessed a majority of the attack.
He is in jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
