Run/walk to replace police vs. fire ball game

Austin Police will be sprinting the streets of Austin come September, but they won’t be chasing criminals this time.

The Austin Police Officers Association is holding its first 5K run/walk on Sept. 8, which will now take the place of the police versus fire department baseball game. The run, organized by officer Mark Walski, will start at 9 a.m. at the Todd Park north fields. Registration will begin at 8 and is open to the public.

The police may have a tough time keeping up with some of their teammates, however, as the Austin High School cross country team is joining them. All proceeds from the event will go back toward programs around Austin and Mower County. A portion will go to support the cross country team, as well.

Registration for the event is Aug. 23 and costs $25, or $30 thereafter. All participants will receive a T-shirt, as well. Registration forms are available at the Austin Police Department of South Central Athlete. For more information, call Walski at 460-1809.
