Adela M. Smeby, 89, Stillwater

Adela M. Smeby, 89, of Stillwater, Minn., formerly of St. Paul, died suddenly on Sept. 16 in her sleep.

Adela was a loved and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran in Inver Grove, OES for more than 60 years and Western Fraternal Life Association for over 80 years. Adela graduated from Blooming Prairie in 1940 and attended the U of M. She and Horace farmed near Austin, Minn., for 17 years, moved to St. Paul and retired from the state Department of Transportation. Adela sang and spoke Czech and was very proud of her Czech heritage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Horace of 57 years; brother, Frank Broulik; and sister, Blanche Pearson.

She was survived by her sons, Howard (Kay), Hudson, Wis., James (Fran), Inver Grove; daughter, Patricia; grandchildren, John Dirks, Scott Smeby, Steve (Tina) Smeby, Joycelyn (Chris) Jessessky, Sarah Smeby; great-grandsons, Luke and Bennett Smeby; sisters-in-law, Norma Smeby, Albert Lea, Minn., Janet Bothun, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, friends and Eastern Star sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7600 Cahill Ave., Inver Grove Heights, Minn. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with an OES service at 7:30 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 8108 Barbara Ave., Inver Grove Heights, and from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Acacia Park Cemetery.
