Margaret Mary Miland, 70, Austin

Margaret “Marty” Mary Miland, 70, of Austin, Minn., died Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 2012, at District 1 Hospital in Faribault, Minn.

Margaret was born Oct. 19, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of George and Irene (Hudson) Sippel. She was raised in Austin where she graduated from Pacelli High School. On Dec. 28, 1959, she was united in marriage to Larry Dwayne Miland at the chapel of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. The couple moved to northern Minnesota, then returned to Austin five years later. While living in Austin, Margaret worked the Charley’s Supper Club and Nemitz’s Hallmark Store. She was a founding member of the Riverside BMX track in the early 1980s. After Larry’s retirement in 1985, the couple purchased the Nicols Hobby Store. They renamed it Marty’s Hobbycraft and continued to operate it until 2009. While operating the store, Marty taught many painting classes to area residents. She enjoyed bike rides, nature hikes, fishing, camping and especially enjoyed spending time at the family trailer at Shady Acres Resort on Roberds Lake near Faribault. Larry died on Oct. 16, 2007.

Survivors include her children, Renee Ferrin of Duluth and Sean (Elizabeth) Miland of Austin; five grandchildren, Rachael, Megan, Shane, Mathilda and Magnus; one great-grandchild, Evelyn; three brothers, Dennis Sippel of Austin, Fred Sippel of Duluth and Joseph (Ruth) Sippel of Austin; one sister, Patricia (Jim) Kruse of Eden Prairie; a brother-in-law, Dolvin (Donna) Miland of Belmond, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by parents, George and Irene; husband, Larry Miland on Oct. 16, 2007, her infant son Theron and her son-in-law, Shawn Ferrin.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Portinga, AIM, officiating. Interment will be held at the Bloomfield Cemetery near Ostrander. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
