Marian E. Carroll, 98, of Austin, Minn., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Our House Assisted Living in Austin.

Marian Eleanor Thorson was born Sept. 5, 1914, at Adams, Minn., the daughter of Enoch and Martha (Kleppe) Thorson. She grew up in the Adams area and graduated from Adams High School in the Class of 1932. Marian graduated from normal school in Austin. She taught in rural schools in the Lyle and Myrtle areas. Her parents moved to a farm in the Lyle/London area. There she met Maurice “Shorty” Carroll and they were married on June 14, 1937, at St. Joseph, Mo. The Carrolls lived and farmed in the London area.

Marian was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. She had been a Sunday school teacher and Bible teacher. She had served on the Freeborn County Library Board and many blood drives, and was a member of the Mother’s Club. Marian enjoyed reading, fishing, traveling and playing golf. She also liked to play cards and had taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren several card games.

Marian is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Rosalie Carroll, Austin; Douglas and Ilene Carroll, Austin; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband “Shorty” in 1972, her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Portinga, AiM, officiating. Entombment will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. There will be visitation at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday morning from 9:30 until the time of the service. Memorials may be directed to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Foundation.

Casket bearers will be Marian’s grandchildren, Chris Carroll, John Carroll, Kelle Shubkagel, Kimberly Klein, Shannon Robinson, Katherine Carroll and Kaitlynn Carroll.
