MANKATO — The Awesome Blossoms had six turnovers and they trailed 21-13 going into the fourth quarter, but their sophomore quarterback dug them out of a hole as they rallied to beat Mankato Loyola (0-5 overall) 27-21 Friday.
BP’s John Rumpza hit Michael Thomas on a 27-yard TD with 10:51 left to bring BP (4-1 overall) within 21-19 and he found Thomas for a 23-yard TD to give BP the lead for good with 2:32 left.
Rumpza threw for 399 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions.
“John was a little nervous to start the game and he threw a couple of balls high that led to turnovers,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “To see him come back like that under pressure was huge.”
Thomas tied a school record with 11 catches and he broke a school record with 247 receiving yards to go with his three touchdowns.
“He’s pretty tough and he had a huge night,” Gimbel said of Thomas.
