FAIRMONT — The No. 9 seeded Austin girls soccer team knocked off No. 8 Fairmount 2-0 on the road in the first round of the Section 2A tournament Monday.
Junior midfielder Brianna Ritter scored to put Austin up 1-0 in the first half and she drilled a penalty kick for the second goal of the night.
Fairmont (5-10-2 overall), which beat Austin 3-1 Aug. 23, had a chance to tie the game in the first half with a penalty kick but Austin freshman Chloe Summerfield stopped it.
“The girls played really amazing from beginning to end,” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said. “They played like they did against Albert Lea and they had confidence.”
The win was especially sweet for Camarena-Corzo because he was named Section 2A coach of the year and his assistant Tim Kana was named Section 2A assistant coach of the year.
“We’re really excited and it’s been an unbelievable day,” he said.
Austin will now play at No. 1 Mankato East (13-3 overall) Thursday at 7 p.m. The Packers loss to the Cougars 3-2 Sept. 13.
Austin had led that contest 2-1, but East ended up scoring the game-winning goal with three minutes left.
“I think the girls are ready and we know we need to play our style of soccer wherever we go,” Camarena-Corzo said.
