Before the Vikings and Packers battle on Sunday, their local fans will show which are more generous.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Salvation Army in Austin will host a friendlier — and gentler — competition to see who can donate more to its kettle drive; fans of the Minnesota Vikings or Green Bay Packers. Fans can drop money into a green kettle for the Packers or a purple kettle for the Vikings at the Hy-Vee in Austin, 1001 18th Ave. NW, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Salvation Army is also still looking for volunteers for the day.
The kettle drive kicked off on Nov. 15 and goes through Dec. 24, Christmas eve. The group is aiming for $60,000 from its drive this year, up from the $45,000 goal last year. In 2011, the drive surpassed the goal and raised $56,500 and helped bring the overall fundraising for Austin’s Salvation Army to $139,000. For total fundraising, the Salvation Army hopes for $150,000 this year.
