Helen Mondzak Baker, 90, passed into eternal glory on Nov. 28, 2012, in Maple Plain, former resident of Austin, Minn.

Helen was born to Hungarian immigrants in Alpha, N.J., on Feb. 21, 1922.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell, of 60 years; daughter, Lori; sons, Bryan and Bradley; parents, Joseph and Anna; sisters, Anna Lilly and Margaret Mann; and brother, Joseph Mondzak. She is survived by her children, Linda Fredenburg (Daniel), Blaine (Lori), Bryce (Carol), Loann Maas (Jeffrey) and Bob (Deborah Shellberg); 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brother, Michael Mondzak; sisters, Julia Criswell and Loretta Henry; many friends and loved ones.

She served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an Army Nurse, where she met the love of her life. Their story was immortalized in the book “Love Stories of WWII.” After the war, her nursing career was spent first as the “nurse to the neighborhood” and then as director of nursing at Burr Oak Manor in Austin. She is remembered for her unconditional love for her family and friends, compassionate heart and a listening ear. Memorial service Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at noon at Excelsior Covenant Church, www.excelcov.org, 19995 Excelsior Blvd, Excelsior, MN 55331.
