The Austin girls hockey team struggled out of the gates in a 6-1 loss to Tartan in the opening round of the Steve’s Pizza-Austin Merchants Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Titans (8-4-1 overall) scored three goals in a four-minute stretch in the first period to break open the game.

“Tartan’s a really good team and they’ve had a good season,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “We had some opportunities and our special teams played well.”

The Packers (2-11 overall) got on the board in the third period when Carley Grunewald got free on a shorthanded situation and powered a slapshot into the top of the net.

Austin also held Tartan to just once score in the third.

“We never quit and that’s been our motto all season,” Bray said. “But our defense and goaltending were a little soft today. We’re a young team and we’ve got to keep chugging along.”
