Melvin Rieken, 86, of Grand Meadow, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

Melvin Rieken was born March 13, 1926, to Michael and Kate Rieken in Brownsdale, Minn. He was united in marriage to Laura Schmidt in Austin on Dec. 30, 1950, and served in the military from January 1951 until September 1951. Mel worked as a farm laborer for Sue Dugan, Bill Gross, Dick and Gary Graft and Libby’s. He enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, Stock car racing, camping, the Minnesota Twins, Playing the Wii at the Nursing home and Spending time with his family. Mel volunteered at the nursing home before becoming a resident there in 2007.

He is survived by his children, Jim Rieken of Stewartville, Marilyn (Brian) Radloff and Allen (Brenda) Rieken both of Grand Meadow; stepchildren Clair (Bonnie) Harvey of Jackson, Mich., Larry (Linda) Harvey of Lake City, Minn., and Betty Harvey of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dick and Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laura; one son, Kevin; five brothers, Lloyd, Ben, George, Bill and Hank; four sisters Ollie, Minnie, Betty and Susan.

Funeral services for Melvin Rieken will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Pahl officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Meadow Cemetery.
