10. Two landmark Austin diners announce re-openings
Locals got a double dose of good news in November and December, as new owners announced they were re-opening a pair of iconic restaurants which had both been closed for several months.
The son of Tolly’s Time Out’s original owner Dave Tollefson announced in November he would re-open the family diner that has sat at 100 14th St. SW since 1984. Brian told the Herald last week he plans to open — original menu and all — on Jan. 29.
Across town at 1207 N Main St., an Owatonna couple purchased Jerry’s Other Place on Dec. 14, and plan to re-open it as Olivia’s Family Restaurant in January, featuring a wide variety of family recipes and breakfast served all day.
“Austin needed it,” Brian Tollefson said of the two restaurants re-opening. “It’s a lot of work, but we’re getting excited.”
Tolly’s closed in May 2011, re-opened as Home Plate in December 2011, and closed again in April. Jerry’s — which opened in 1979 — has been closed since November 2011.
The Owatonna couple, Olivia and Logan Hughes, own a restaurant by the same name in Owatonna.
“We actually have a lot of customers from Blooming Prairie and Austin, and they’ve been really excited with the news that we’re coming to Austin,” Olivia said in December.
