Donald John Kaplan, 82, of Blooming Prairie, Minn., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at his home.

Donald was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Steele County, Minn., to John and Alice (Klecker) Kaplan. He attended District 85 schools, and made his occupation as a farmer. Donald served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, serving on the front lines in the Korean War for 14 months. He was the recipient of the Korean War Service Medal. On Nov. 3, 1973, he married Karen Kaplan at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie. A lifelong resident of Steele County, Don liked fishing, bowling, crafts, quilting, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. He was a member of St. Columbanus Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 52. Don was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. After many years of farming, Don and Karen moved into Blooming Prairie in 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Kaplan of Blooming Prairie; brothers Eugene (Deann) Kaplan of Blooming Prairie, Myron Kaplan of Hope, Minn.; sister, Arlene Sisler of Owatonna, Minn.; sister-in-law Mary Kaplan of Owatonna; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Kaplan; his brother Lawrence; his sister and brother-in-law Evelyn (Joe) Herron; a brother-in-law Eddie Sisler; and sister-in-law Marie Kaplan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie with Father Ed McGrath officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home. The parish rosary service begins at 3 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in St. Columbanus Catholic Cemetery in Blooming Prairie, with military rites by American Legion Post 52 and VFW Post 878.
