Wallace Andrew Powell, 86, Hampton, Iowa

Wallace Andrew Powell, 86, of Hampton, Iowa, and formerly of LeRoy, Minn., passed away Jan. 6, 2013, at the Franklin Nursing Facility in Hampton of natural causes.

He was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Mammoth Springs, Ark., to James Ray Powell and Lily Pepper. On June 5, 1948, Wallace was united in marriage to Florence Backus and together they lived near LeRoy until the late 1960s when they moved to Brooklyn Park, Minn. They had three children: Vernon, Karen, and Ricky.

As a child, Wallace lived in Chinook, Mont., and Mammoth Springs. Later he worked in the Iron Ore Mines near Spring Valley, Minn. He also drove semi for Armstrong Trucking and Oliver Manufacturing in Charles City, Iowa, and worked as an electric motor technician in Minnesota. He retired and continued farming in Milaca, Minn. After his wife Florence passed away in 2009, he lived with his daughter Karen in Hampton, Iowa. He loved to farm, fish and camp.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Steve) Kulow of Hampton; sons, Vernon (Kathleen) Powell of Hope, Minn., and Ricky (Ronda) Powell of Hot Springs; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, a five-generation family; a brother, Rollie Powell; and sisters Opal Uher and Hazel Powell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; his parents; brothers, Clay and Elzie; an infant sister; and one great grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy with interment at the LeRoy cemetary.
