Elvina L. Hicks, 95, of Austin, Minn., died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System–Austin.
Elvina Lorraine Twedt was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Forest City, Iowa, to Mons and Martina (Olson) Twedt. She attended country schools, graduating from Woden High School, Woden, Iowa, in 1935.
On Aug. 15, 1938, Elvina and Laurence Lester were united in marriage in Estherville, Iowa. Laurence died in June 1948. In 1953, she married Leo Fasbender. The couple moved to Arizona in 1969. After Leo’s death in September 1975, she moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where she married Charles Hicks in 1977. After their marriage, the couple moved to Palm Desert, Calif.
Charles passed away in 1985.
At this time, Elvina moved back to Las Vegas to be close to her daughter Shirley. In 2005, she returned to Austin with Shirley. Elvina worked at Holtz Drug in Austin, and as a laborer at Hormel Foods for 15 years. She liked to sew, and particularly to make doll clothes and work on her doll house. She also enjoyed crafts and remodeling.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley (John) Thielman of Austin; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister Arlis Eiseland of Sioux Falls, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents Mons and Martina Twedt; her husbands Laurence Lester, Leo Fasbender and Charles Hicks; two sons, John David Fasbender in infancy and Merle James Lester in 1998; four brothers and two sisters.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden, Iowa, at a later date. Memorials can be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Building Fund. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
