Riverland Community College is ready to have a discussion on racism in music next Monday.

To celebrate its Multicultural Center, Riverland will host the acoustic hip-hop duo Scratch Track starting at 11 a.m. Monday inside the Frank W. Bridges Theatre.

“We’ve had the center for a while but we haven’t advertised it officially, so this is the grand kickoff,” said Melodee Morem, international student adviser at Riverland.

Scratch Track has toured colleges across the country since forming in 2000. They will lead a discussion on racism in music starting at noon, where the audience will discuss perceptions, stereotypes and cultural influences on popular music. Much of what Scratch Track will discuss ties into Riverland curriculum, according to Morem.

“It just seemed like it was a really good fit,” she said.

The event is free and open to the public.
