The Lyle Public School District has found its new superintendent.

Jennifer Backer, the current superintendent in Cromwell, Minn., has been hired as part-time superintendent in Lyle. The school board made the decision final to approve the superintendent’s contract at a Wednesday evening meeting.

“She has a high energy level,” said Joe Guanella, interim superintendent. “She’ll really hit the ground running.”

Backer will work a .3 full time schedule for $31,000 a year.

“In a two-week stretch, [Backer] will be engaged with the school three days,” Gunaella said.

Backer is scheduled to begin July 1.

“She does have the experience,” said board member Carl Truckenmiller. “One thing that is great is she’s willing to work part time … It seems like she’s ready to do a great job for our school district.”

Earlier this month the board had contacted Backer to offer her the position, and she requested time to review the contract before responding, he said. Backer and the board had been in contact, working out two different contracts to choose from, Guanella said. They finished the contracts Tuesday night, which left the board to approve one Wednesday.

The board chose Backer following interviews in mid-February, when the board met with Backer along with Michelle Mortensen, the current K-12 superintendent and principal in Ivanhoe, Minn., and Martin Avelsgaard, previously the superintendent at Lake Superior School District and director of Sana’a International School in Yemen.
