Community Pride Day set for Saturday

Collecting trash in the pouring rain has been a theme the past several springs in Austin. Prideful community members will for the seventh year scour the city for loose trash on Saturday, April 27 — this time, they hope, with no rain.
Volunteers for the seventh annual Community Pride Day will meet at 9 a.m. in the municipal pool parking lot, where from there they will deploy to the parks, trails, ponds and scenic areas of Austin to tidy up the city.
Last year, participation was just shy of 200 people. This year, volunteers may catch a break as the National Weather Service forecasts 67 degrees and mostly sunny with little wind.
“I’m kind of excited to see how many people will be there Saturday because they’re saying it’s going to be a nice day,” Underwood said.
Many community businesses have again donated food, trash bags, gloves and waste storage for the event, and city council member Steve King has volunteered to pick up the bags at the end of the day. The Vision 2020 Community Pride committee will also bolster the effort for 2013.
Underwood used to reserve three, large dumpsters for storing the trash; however, she believes the event is beginning to make a difference as she now reserves just one. Volunteers will also separate recyclables from trash to make a bigger difference.
There is no need to sign up ahead of time for Community Pride Day, but groups looking to secure designated areas can contact Parks and Recreation at 507-433-1881.
