Marla Mary Greeley Gazes, 78, of 99 Skyline Circle went peacefully in her sleep to join her beloved husband of 56 years, the late Sam Louis Gazes, at April’s Villa of Reno, Nevada.

Marla Mary Gazes was born on May 23, 1934, in Austin, Minn., to Fred Peter and Irene Grace (Schneider) Greeley. Marla met Sam Louis Gazes, the love of her life, at the Historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. They married on June 12,1955, in Mason City, Iowa.

Marla and Sam relocated to California in 1956 where they established the “Sam’s Burger’s” restaurant chain in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Sam’s Burger’s” continues to be a well known restaurant chain and is owned and operated by their grandson and husband’s namesake Sam Louis Gazes.

Marla was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland, Calif., Mason City and Reno.

Survivors include one son, Louis Sam Gazes and daughter-in-law Roxanne Gazes of Reno; daughters Costadena Irene Gazes of San Leandro, Calif., Eleni Lou Moreno and son-in-law Benjamin Moreno of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Sam Louis Gazes, her husband’s namesake and his wife Heather Anne Gazes of Alameda, Calif.; granddaughters Rachel Renee Gazes of Reno, Amber Irene Gazes, Elina and Eilie Moreno of San Diego; great-grandchildren, Elias Sam Gazes, Brooklyn Anne Gazes, Lexi Julie Gazes of Alameda California and Gabriel Romeo Gazes of Reno; sister Gale Schneider of Austin; and many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Peter and Irene Grace (Schneider) Greeley; brother John P. Greeley; sister Yvonne Harrison; and grandson Joseph William Gazes of Reno.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Ave., Reno on Thursday, April 4, where a Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral ceremony will be held at Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church, 4795 Lakeside Drive, Reno on Friday, April 5, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. Officiating will be the Rev. Father Stephen Karcher and the Rev. Father George Bratiotis. May her memory be eternal.
