The Austin Parks and Recreation board approved a request Wednesday evening for a local woman to organize a fundraiser and competition at the Austin skate park this summer.

Autumn Lopez is holding the event at the skate park from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 21. Funds will be used to build new rails and ramps at the park.

Lopez, a local woman who has a passion for skateboarding, sees plenty of skateboarders and BMX bikers as an employee at Reed’s 4th Avenue gas station, not far from the skate park, and she knows the park could use some upgrades.

“It could use so much more,” she said.

So Lopez is already selling Austin Skaters Association T-shirts, available for $20 at Reed’s, to raise funds for improvements at the park. While a similar fundraiser was held last year at Bandshell Park in Austin with music and entertainment, the focus has changed this year. Lopez has organized a disc jockey and landed support from Monster Energy, which donated prizes, such as T-shirts, drinks and more. There will also be a raffle.

Spectators will have a chance to watch four competitions: skateboarding, rollerblading, scooters and BMX bikes. The competition is free to enter.
