A competition and fundraiser held at the skatepark in Austin last Friday drew more than just a crowd; it drew $3,181 for new equipment and a facelift.
According to Autumn Lopez, who organized the event, tee shirt sales, concessions, raffles and an anonymous donation of $2,500 combined to reach that total.
“That is so awesome,” she said about the success.
Lopez met with Austin Parks and Recreation on Monday to count the funds, and she hopes a car wash this summer will raise even more to upgrade the skatepark.
Lopez said she will meet with people who use the skatepark and decide what the specific upgrades will be. From what she has been hearing, that could potentially include installing a new rail, cleaning the park and finding an artist to repaint the graffiti. Lopez also hopes to reorganize the Austin Area Skaters Association by finding a president and other board members.
“We’ll get this going so it’s an actual association where we have members, so we can keep this thing rolling,” she said.
Lopez also hopes to make the competition and fundraiser an annual event.
