The Southland baseball team had its season come to an end in a 4-0 loss to Wabasha-Kellogg in the Section 1A finals in the Riverland baseball complex Wednesday.
WK (15-1 overall) scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth inning. It all began when No. 9 hitter Jethro Roemer struck out but advanced to first on a wild pitch to open the fifth. The Falcons tallied four singles in the frame as they surged to a 4-0 lead.
Southland (16-4 overall) had the bases loaded with two outs in the third and fourth innings, but it couldn’t knock in a run to take the lead.
“We didn’t have timely hitting and we had a couple miscues,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “We had our chances”
WK pitcher Will Greenheck retired nine of the last 10 Southland hitters he faced to close out the game.
Southland pitcher Lukas Anderson struck out 11 and allowed eight hits in the loss.
Southland last went to the Class ‘A’ state tournament in 2010 and this was the second straight year they lost in the section title game.
“We’ve been in this game a lot and most teams don’t get the opportunity to be here,” Retterath said. “Sometimes I think with high school athletics people expect too much from them. They’re still 16 and 17 year old kids. Most of them aren’t even 18 yet.”
